The LOC:

Organizes Terrace Literacy Task Group meetings throughout the year
Communicates literacy updates to Task Group members
Coordinates local literacy initiatives involving multiple stakeholders

Why Literacy Matters:

Below you can read about the research that covers 11 literacy myths here in Canada and recommendations on what should be done to help Canadian literacy increase.

Poverty:

Literacy skill level and household income are positively related. At $84,600, the median household income for individuals with the highest literacy proficiency (level 4 and level 5) was 70% higher than it was for those with lowest literacy proficiency (level 1 and below), and 33% higher than for those in the level 2 proficiency category. Imagination Library

What is the Imagination Library?

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a free, early literacy program that delivers age-appropriate books to children ages 0 to 5 years old each month.

Encouraging the love of reading and learning early in a child’s life helps to develop strong literacy skills.

Statistics and independent reports have shown Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library drastically improves early childhood literacy and enhances kindergarten readiness.

Children read more when they have books at home.  A follow up study released August 2015 compares the kindergarten readiness of children who participated in Imagination Library for at least three or four years of the program vs. children who did not participate.

The results shows a 28.9% increase in the number of children who were prepared for kindergarten based on this measure.

Imagination Library – We Need Your Help!

We are always grateful for Donations to help us keep Imagination Library alive and available for children here in the great Northwest!

Dollywood Foundation covers the cost of books but we cover the cost of postage.

Help us reach our goal to sign up all families in Terrace.

The program costs the host agency $3.55/book.

That works out to be $31,950 a year to help support every child in Terrace under the age of 5 to receive a free book in the mail every month.

Join us in the support of literacy here in the Northwest.
